A Writing Dream Realized

September 6, 2013

Isn’t it always wonderful when you can check something off the bucket list? I had one such moment last night, and I am still feeling the high of it today.

I have been writing publicly for 5 years through various blogs. A few years ago I completed my first e-book, which was a major accomplishment in itself. However, it mostly sat on a site unnoticed as I hadn’t yet figured out the strategies to market and sell it. Life got busier, so I just put it on the shelf for a while, then posted it publicly for free to receive feedback and to use it to help others. I was told by several people whose opinions I value highly that this book should be published and sold. Once again I looked into taking this route.

A couple of months ago I took the time to research how to make this happen. Extra time was still short, but I arrived at the point where nothing was going to get in the way of making this happen. I realized how easy it was to get this e-book published on major platforms like Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. Or was it? This un-technically savvy person struggled to get even the basics down, and was stuck again. I got so frustrated that once again, the publishing dream was put on hold. I must say that I am not one to give up easily. I had other important things in life to tend to and didn’t always have the full opportunity and time to spend pursuing this. However, where I often go wrong is that I am slow to ask for help. Many people around me are less technical than I am, so¬†using their help was not an option. However, I waited way to long to find and solicit others.

Finally, a few weeks ago I was introduced to a site called Fiverr. It’s a site where people will perform any type of service for $5. I checked it out, and sure enough found someone who was willing to do all the formatting and technical adjustments that I couldn’t do for $5. Someone else at another site had offered $40, but I didn’t have that extra in my budget at that time, so I held off. A $5 price was a steal. The quality of work I received was top-notch, and my problems were solved.

When my book formatting “passed the test”, it was very easy to complete the publication process. Now, as I write this, my dream of being a published¬†author has come true.

I share this as a reminder that dreams can always come true. Sometimes it takes a little longer than it should, but it can happen if you have faith and persistence.

If you would like to check out the finished product, you can click on the link below to the sales page which includes a link to the e-book.

30 Days To A More Powerful Life

Here’s to hoping your dreams come true as well. Enjoy the blessings : )

A Fast Way To A Remarkable Life

April 1, 2013

I’ve been away for the past few days. I attended a Fine Arts competition in Syracuse NY. Members of our church participate regularly, but this year was extra special for me because my 13 year old daughter participated for the first time. A group wrote a song, and she was invited to sing it for them. We were very proud as she did a great job, especially for her first performance in front of a public crowd. If it went well enough, she would have the opportunity to compete in national competition in Orlando. Exciting stuff!

As it turns out, my daughter did not receive the opportunity to move on. Why not? After all, I said she was very good, right? Very true. However, as we waited to see who would move on, the top acts performed again for the large crowd. It was here where I realized why they were moving on. It’s because they stood out from the rest. Some sang, some played instruments, some preached, and some acted in skits. Many performers were very good. In every category, these top performers were different from the rest. They all did something and had something that the others did not. This is why they were so remarkable.

I am lucky that I am able to do several things in life well. Some I do very well. However, through this experience I realized that, for me to take my life to the next level, good and well is not enough. I need to stand out in whatever area I want to take to a higher level. For example, I am a good teacher. My students learn and generally enjoy my classroom experience. However, in order to excel as a teacher, that can’t be good enough. I need to ask, what can I do to make this experience memorable and at the highest level possible?

I love to write, and believe I am a fairly good writer. However, it is my goal to stand out and touch thousands of lives a day. In order for that to happen, I need to stand out in some way. I need to constantly ask myself and others how I can do that. Only in that way can my writing be its absolute best and positively impact as many people as possible.

I challenge you to do the same. What is it that you want to excel at? What part of your life are you seeking to be truly remarkable? To make it happen, find out how you can stand out. What can you do that others can’t?

You may be wondering, “how can I answer that question”? I certainly don’t have all the answers. What I usually do is pray for divine guidance. God has all of the answers. He can and will direct you if you need help. Ask in prayer what you can do to stand out. If you truly seek answers they will come. Then act on the inspiration you receive and make it happen. Keep in mind that, especially when you pray and invite God into the equation, you are actually inviting His light to shine through you. All you have to do is turn on the switch. When you let His light shine, people will definitely notice as His grace is manifested. Another thing that works is to seek answers online through articles, other blogs, and videos. It’s amazing how much you can find out from others with the same concerns and goals.

My daughter and her group performed very well. They were good enough to move on. However, they didn’t because there were other groups that simply did more to stand out. If you don’t already know, please realize you have many talents and many things you can do well. If you are seeking to make your life remarkable, I challenge you to figure out what to do to stand out. Then do it. I have much more focus on this challenge of standing out and letting the Spirit of God manifest through me. I will say that it’s a fun challenge, and I invite you to enjoy it as well.

I would appreciate it very much if you would share what works for you and how you stand out in a particular area. I am sure there is plenty of valuable information and assistance I am leaving out here. It would certainly help other readers if there is any input you can provide. Many blessings : )

Uncomfortable Success

November 5, 2012

Ah, the comfort zone. Everyone craves it. It’s just the way we are wired. There are not many things better than comfortably enjoying the goodness of life. Everything is better when we are comfortable, right?

Be careful before you answer that question. I agree that I would much rather be comfortable than not. The potential problem is that sometimes people become too comfortable. As a result, they don’t try new things, take risks, or seek new challenges. As a result, life becomes stagnant, and people don’t progress as far as they would like.

You may ask…how do I change this? After all, it is difficult to come out of my comfort zone. This is true. It is sometimes very dificult. Why is that? It’s because of the set-up of our subconscious mind. Your subconscious tries to set things up so that you reach and live in that comfort zone. This comfort zone is the truth that you have come to know. Your subconscious doesn’t like when something goes against this truth. Sometimes this truth is that you can only handle the job that you currently have, no matter how difficult it is or how much you dislike it. Sometimes this truth is that you cannot be a positive partner in a relationship. Sometimes this truth is that you cannot reach the weight you are seeking. Or that you can only a reach a certain level of income. Or…this list can go on and on.

So how does one defeat this cycle and change the truth? It’s a matter of telling your subconscious a different story to create a new truth. There are three main ways to do this. One is by positive affirmations. Tell yourself a new truth. Tell yourself that you can and will reach your goals. Second, is to visualize the success you are craving. It’s amazing that your subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between a real or imagined event. The more it sees the positive pictures you create, the more it believes it as being true. Third and most important is to take action. You need to do things that are outside of your comfort zone. As mentioned, this is difficult at first. However, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. For me, I always had difficulty speaking in front of crowds. I didn’t think I was an effective speaker. However, because of my college major of Communications and the radio field I wished to enter, I was forced to speak in front of people on a regular basis. As I did it, it became easier. I actually began to enjoy it. I spent several years in radio. Now, I confidently speak in front of students everyday as a teacher. I always loved to write. However, it was usually just for me. The prospect of blogging caught my attention, but I held back because I doubted that anyone would be interested in what I would have to say. Still, I came away from the comfort zone. Now I am lucky enough to receive positive responses from hundreds of readers on various blog sites. It would have never happened if I would not have stepped away from the comfort zone.

I have recently been challenged, and I relay this challenge to you. Every day, do at least one thing (or even more) that is outside of your comfort zone. Anything from trying a new food, a new outfit, a new sport/activity, or doing something that you’ve been holding back on for a long time. This type of action on a regular basis will take you steps ahead of where you are now. Your subconscious will ultimately find and create those new truths that you are seeking. You will reach your goals faster, and create success in all areas of your life.

The bottom line is this…It is ok to enjoy comfort and the good things in life. However, you cannot avoid straying from that comfort zone that has been created. Take some chances and seek new challenges. You can and will meet them, and your life will be taken to a higher level. That’s something you can be very comfortable with. Enjoy the blessings : )
