The Power Of Intention Statements

Do you have a to-do list? I have learned that it is very helpful to have my plans written down, along with the goals to be accomplished each day. I try as much as I can to do this on a daily basis.

I have become more aware of ways to enhance the quality of life. One that I consistently read about is the concept of intention statements. An intention statement is exactly that..an intention. You say to yourself consistently that you intend to…and fill in the blank with a goal you are seeking to accomplish.

Do these work? I believe they work the same as the to-do list I mentioned earlier. For example, my to-do list for today might say something about grading papers for all of my classes, and picking up a list of items at Walmart. Those are the goals. The list is something that keeps me focused on accomplishing those goals. If I use this as an intention, I can simply say that I intend to grade papers for all of my classes today and I intend to get A, B, and C at Walmart. I’m focused, I do what I need to do, and it gets done.

I am finding more each day that these intentions can be used for far more. They can be used to enhance the quality of your life in all areas. You can say things like..”I intend to spend at least 30 minutes of quality time with my family each day”; “I intend to add positivity and joy to the lives of at least 10 people today”; I intend to earn X dollars this year; I intend to bring my weight to X pounds within two months. These are just a few examples. Some can be general, but the best ones are the ones that are specific and measurable.

Why are intentions so effective? Mainly because intentions help you to keep your focus on the goal instead of the things that pull you away from it. It also makes the goal more believable. The more you repeat your intention, your subconscious mind believes it more and more. With enough repetition, you are convincing yourself that the desired result will take place. Once your subconscious believes something, it’s only a matter of time until you are lead towards manifestation of the goal.

Ultimately what you are doing when you use intention statements is using a glorified to-do list. You are writing down and saying what needs to get done, then you decide what you need to do and do it. It’s as simple as that. So why not put some lofty and ambitious goals on your intention list. Pray for God’s guidance, start moving and acting right away, and experience the joy of your goals being reached. Enjoy the blessings : )


Affirm Belief

All things are possible to him who believes – Mark 9:23

The above quote is easily one of my favorites in the Bible. It also comes from one of my favorite stories in the New Testament. A man asks Jesus to heal his son “if he can”. Jesus questions him..”if I can”? like..are you kidding me? Don’t you know I can do anything?

As much as I enjoy the above story, there are many times where it hits me right between the eyes. There are many times where I pray “if you can” prayers. There are other times where I lack the faith needed to make all things possible.

A question I’ve often asked and you may be asking right now is..how do I change this? How do I develop the belief necessary to make all things possible? I have found that there are two main ways..

  1. Ask – Simply ask God for it. This has always been a bit ironic for me. I’m supposed to ask God for things with the faith that He’ll do it. So how can I actually ask Him for faith? Sounds weird, but He is ready and willing to help us increase our faith. In the story above, after Jesus rebukes the man’s “if you can” statement and says all things are possible, the man asks Him for this very faith to make all things possible. In the next verse he specifically asks, “please help me overcome my unbelief!”
  2. Positive affirmations – Besides divine help, I am convinced God has given us the will and ability to help ourselves. I also believe he expects us to use it. One way I’ve learned to do this is by positive affirmations. I often discuss the benefits of positive affirmations on this blog. If you don’t already know, they are simple positive statements you say to yourself over and over until you begin to believe it. These statements can be extremely simple. For example, in his book “The Power of Positive Thinking”, Norman Vincent Peale says the best way to stop worrying and have faith is to simply say to yourself, “I believe” over and over and over again. If you think it doesn’t work, then try it. I have used this technique many times in stressful situations, and in some cases it’s as if the stress magically disappears. Other simple phrases work just as well, especially other Bible verses like the one I began this article with.

The bottom line is that the more your brain hears these statements, you feel the corresponding emotion, and take inspired action, you believe it. These thoughts then become part of you and your being. These thoughts replace the thoughts of worry and unbelief. What happens next is that it affects the action you take. In fact, if you let unbelief linger you often take no action because you are afraid of failure. When your mind is full of faithful thoughts, you instead are convinced of success and will take the action quickly to make it happen.

If you want the results you are seeking in life, affirm belief and faith. Say it and see it in your mind. Then watch it unfold on the big screen of your life. The coolest thing is that, once you see these positive results, it only increases your level of belief, and more great things happen. Believe me, I can totally affirm that this is true. Can We Receive A Million Dollars From A Song?

I’ve always enjoyed the song “If I Had A Million Dollars” by BNL. It’s a catchy song by a bunch of Canadian guys having some fun. If you haven’t heard it, the song is about what the guys would do and have, and what life would be like if they had a million dollars.

Some people enjoy listening to the song and dreaming along with them. Others discard the thought. “I don’t have a million dollars or a way to get it, so why should I even bother thinking about it?”, they say.

The song is a humorous and laid back way of thinking those million dollar thoughts. However, learning what I have in the past few years, I think these guys have something more than a good song here. I have learned that it’s a great idea to think about things as we want to experience them. If we do it deliberately, and add the emotion of already having it, the thought becomes more than just a dream. It becomes our reality.

When you use your imagination, focus on the most exact and specific details, and experience the strong positive emotions associated with the desired success, your subconscious mind begins taking it as being true and real. Then when you take the appropriate action, you are acting in a confident manner that will bring you the very success you imagined. Your confidence and faith grows, and as long as you keep thinking and acting positively, the success will continue.

For those of you who are afraid to dream because you find your goals unreachable or impossible, you will prove yourself correct. However, if you refuse to see a million dollar dream of any kind as a childish fancy, and want to move yourself towards it, play these crazy imaginary games, and enjoy the experience. Take it a step further, and take time each day to deliberately use your imagination to create the positive, faithful emotions to help create the success you are seeking.

I realize this is just a song, and a bunch of guys having a good time. However, if you’re having any doubts about following the ideas of a music group, I will remind you of one thing…THEY’RE MILLIONAIRES!!!

Uncomfortable Success

Ah, the comfort zone. Everyone craves it. It’s just the way we are wired. There are not many things better than comfortably enjoying the goodness of life. Everything is better when we are comfortable, right?

Be careful before you answer that question. I agree that I would much rather be comfortable than not. The potential problem is that sometimes people become too comfortable. As a result, they don’t try new things, take risks, or seek new challenges. As a result, life becomes stagnant, and people don’t progress as far as they would like.

You may ask…how do I change this? After all, it is difficult to come out of my comfort zone. This is true. It is sometimes very dificult. Why is that? It’s because of the set-up of our subconscious mind. Your subconscious tries to set things up so that you reach and live in that comfort zone. This comfort zone is the truth that you have come to know. Your subconscious doesn’t like when something goes against this truth. Sometimes this truth is that you can only handle the job that you currently have, no matter how difficult it is or how much you dislike it. Sometimes this truth is that you cannot be a positive partner in a relationship. Sometimes this truth is that you cannot reach the weight you are seeking. Or that you can only a reach a certain level of income. Or…this list can go on and on.

So how does one defeat this cycle and change the truth? It’s a matter of telling your subconscious a different story to create a new truth. There are three main ways to do this. One is by positive affirmations. Tell yourself a new truth. Tell yourself that you can and will reach your goals. Second, is to visualize the success you are craving. It’s amazing that your subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between a real or imagined event. The more it sees the positive pictures you create, the more it believes it as being true. Third and most important is to take action. You need to do things that are outside of your comfort zone. As mentioned, this is difficult at first. However, the more you do it, the easier it becomes. For me, I always had difficulty speaking in front of crowds. I didn’t think I was an effective speaker. However, because of my college major of Communications and the radio field I wished to enter, I was forced to speak in front of people on a regular basis. As I did it, it became easier. I actually began to enjoy it. I spent several years in radio. Now, I confidently speak in front of students everyday as a teacher. I always loved to write. However, it was usually just for me. The prospect of blogging caught my attention, but I held back because I doubted that anyone would be interested in what I would have to say. Still, I came away from the comfort zone. Now I am lucky enough to receive positive responses from hundreds of readers on various blog sites. It would have never happened if I would not have stepped away from the comfort zone.

I have recently been challenged, and I relay this challenge to you. Every day, do at least one thing (or even more) that is outside of your comfort zone. Anything from trying a new food, a new outfit, a new sport/activity, or doing something that you’ve been holding back on for a long time. This type of action on a regular basis will take you steps ahead of where you are now. Your subconscious will ultimately find and create those new truths that you are seeking. You will reach your goals faster, and create success in all areas of your life.

The bottom line is this…It is ok to enjoy comfort and the good things in life. However, you cannot avoid straying from that comfort zone that has been created. Take some chances and seek new challenges. You can and will meet them, and your life will be taken to a higher level. That’s something you can be very comfortable with. Enjoy the blessings : )


Positive Results For Positive Thoughts

I write often on this site of the power of thought. It is a fact that we eventually live out the thoughts in our head, whether they are positive or negative.

I was listening to a radio program that gave an excellent axample that proves this concept. How many times in your life has a person or object come to mind for an extended period of time, and shortly after that you see that person or object? Here’s an example in my life… several months ago I was in the market for a new car. Someone suggested a Ford Fusion because of its excellent gas mileage. I had never even heard of a Fusion before, and I was oblivious to ever seeing one on the road. However, once I was made aware of the Fusion and was now focused on it, I saw them on the road everywhere! It was as if the car never existed before (it really didn’t as far as I thought), and now I was seeing them everywhere I went.

Situations like this happen a lot more than we think. When we don’t focus on something, our subconscious mind shuts it out as something we don’t need. That’s actually one of its functions that helps us avoid brain overload. However, when we do focus on something, it’s like our subconscious finds the need to bring us to it as often as possible. It’s seems a little crazy, but it’s true.

Knowing this, we can use it to our advantage. Why not allow our subconscious mind to believe it needs to bring us to all that we desire. How do we do this? By remaining focused on our desires. It’s all a matter of what we keep our focus on. The natural tendency for human beings is to focus on the problem or the things in our life that are not right. The problem with that is, that our subconscious mind then feels the need to bring us to those problems. As a result, we experience more of those problems and obstacles. On the other hand, when we keep our focus on the desired results, we will find ways to bring them about. Like the Fusion example, we will begin to see those positive situations everywhere, and they will continue to come about, sometimes just seeming to come from nowhere.

It is not always easy to keep a focused mind, especially with the fast-paced lives we all live. However, it is important to find the time to keep your mind focused on the positive things you are seeking. If you want it bad enough, you will take the necessary time throughout the day to check in with your thoughts and keep them straight. Only about 5-10 minutes at a time, two or three times a day is enough to accomplish this. Of course if you can find more time, that’s even better.

So what are you thinking about today? Keep your mind on good and powerful thoughts. I will end with this verse from Philippians 4:8… whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 7 Excellent Positive Affirmation Tips

Ok, I’ll admit it. Yes, that was me you saw talking to myself as I was stopped at the red light. But it’s ok. I’m not losing it, going crazy, or anything like that. I was telling myself great things that I need to hear, and I need to believe.

You may recognize this as positive affirmations. I discuss the topic often at this site. It is a very effective way to replace negative beliefs held deep in your subconscious with positve, uplifting ones.

What am I supposed to say, you ask? Whatever you need to believe. Is it more confidence you seek? Remind yourself how much you have. Trying to be a better friend? Remind yourself of how you are a valuable person whose company is a treat.

There are many ways to incorporate positive affirmations into your day. Today, I will share some helpful tips from an article I read recently. It provides excellent information on how to use positive affirmations. I will share the link at the end of the post:

  1. Make all statements positive. No negatives.
  2. Use present tense, as if you already have what you are seeking. Avoid using future tense statements.
  3. Use affirmations that create positive emotions.
  4. Don’t worry about any resistance you may be receiving from your subconscious mind.
  5. Have fun with this!
  6. Once you have said the affirmations several times move on and do something else.
  7. Be patient. You may not see immediate results, but be persistent and you will begin to see the changes you seek.

It is amazing how powerful affirmations can be. I will sometimes be reminded to use them at points in my day when I am struggling. As a result, my thoughts are immediately shifted from negative to positive, and the day changes for the better. How To Direct The Subconscious Mind

There is much power in the subconscious mind. The subconscious is something that we all have. However, many people are unaware of how to use it. Even more people are unaware of the power they possess by using the subconscious mind to their advantage.

Before I explain how to direct the subconscious, let me first provide a crash course about how it works. All of the beliefs and experiences that build up in our lifetime are stored in the subconscious mind. It is this part of the brain that maintains are core beliefs, and it is this part of the brain that ultimately directs our actions. That is because the conscious (thinking) part of our brain is influenced by the subconscious. For example, let’s say you struggled in school, and some peers, parents, and teachers told you that you were not intelligent. The core beliefs in your subconscious tell you that you are not intelligent. Then you believe it, and ultimately take actions which ending up “proving” to your subconscious that it is right. If you are struggling with weight, your experiences and possibly people telling you that you’re fat, are stored in your brain and you believe it yourself. No matter how hard you try to lose weight, you continually act towads confirming the belief of being overweight.

After seeing all this, you may wonder, how can I change this? Since your subconscious beliefs have been formed by what you’ve seen and what you’ve been told, you change the beliefs by changing what the subconscious sees and is told. It’s a matter of replacing the old beliefs with new ones. Here’s a 3 step process to get your subconscious mind to work for you instead of against you:

  1. Think of what you want and see it happening. If you want more money, pick an exact amount, and “experience” having that amount and all of the resulting benefits. If you want to lose weight, think of the exact weight you want to be, and see yourself there, again enjoying all of the benefits.
  2. Direct your subconscious by telling yourself that you are wealthy, you are at the perfect weight, you are an excellent marraige partner, or whatever you want it to believe.
  3. Take the necessary action. When you take action with these new thoughts, you no longer have your negatively established beliefs holding you back. Instead, you have your positively-inspired beliefs pushing you forward.

In order for this to work, you need to do it consistently. I try to do it a few minutes (5-10) a day, about 3 times during the day. That is how your beliefs gradually change. Keep at it, even if you have conflicting thoughts the first few times. That is simply your subconscious trying to prove you wrong. Once you direct it enough though, those new thoughts will take over and you will experience less and less resistence.

The subconscious mind is a powerful tool that can work for you or against you. Follow these steps to help move you forward today. Your faith will increase as you do, resulting in more positive progress. Enjoy the blessings : )


Walk By Faith

For we live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7.

Imagine how much better our lives would be. Imagine how much more empowered we would feel. Imagine the greater impacts we could make during our time on this earth. All if we would take this Bible verse completely to heart, and live it out on a daily basis.

The good news is that it is entirely possible. When we live our lives walking in faith, all of the above situations and more are possible. Is it easy to do? I would say yes and no. It is sometimes difficult to live in faith, especially if things have been difficult and haven’t gone your way. However, it is easy, because it is fully in your control to do. You don’t have to wait or rely on someone else before you can walk in faith. It is fully in your control to begin this instant. Once you start doing it on a regular basis, it becomes easier each day.

So how do we take this new walk of believing before seeing? There are several things you can do. The main thing is to get your mind right. Faith is a mindset. Get it firmly entrenched in your head by telling yourself each day that you choose to live by faith, regardless if things are not going your way at that time. Accept nothing less than a faithful attitude.

Another important idea is to constantly see events and situations in your mind as you want them to be. This again is not easy, especially if your desired outcomes are not taking place in reality. This is the key to faith right here. Keep seeing the positive outcomes in your mind. Replay them over and over. Feel the joy as your desires play out in your mind. What happens when you do this is that your subconscious begins to take hold of it, and you start believing it. How is this important? You need to take some action yourself as you let God do His part. When your mind is in this positive mindset, the action you take is more positive and likely to lead to success. When you take action without the necessary faith, your mindset actually causes you to fail. That is because you will lead yourself to situations that will cause failure. You may have heard of this as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

As your faith grows, keep doing what you are doing. The positive thoughts and success will snowball, and your faith will grow even more. I am also a firm believer in prayer. When you ask God for wisdom and faith, He generously provides it. Not only that, but there have been too many times in my life where He makes things happen to show that He is behind me, and to build my faith even more. He also protects me from any avenues I shouldn’t venture to. The same will be true for you.

The bottom line is that when you only focus on what you are seeing, you are limiting yourself to those circumstances. When you focus on negative or average  thoughts, you only bring more negative and average into your life. In order to break the chain of negative circumstances, and go above the normal routine, you need to change your thinking. Live instead by believing and seeing the desired outcomes coming to pass in your imagination. Before long you will not be imagining it. You will be living it out for real.

I will end with another powerful Bible verse, my favorite of all…Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours (Mark 11:24). This is walking by faith and believing, and the blessings are beyond imagination. Enjoy : )


A Powerful Equation

I will begin with a quote from Napoleon Hill and the classic book, “Think and Grow Rich”…”All thoughts which have been emotionalized and mixed with faith begin immediately to translate into their physical equivelant”.

It’s a very powerful equation. The more I read about it I find that, if you follow that equation each day, it can be a life changer. It’s a fact that life happens according to the way we think. Positive thinkers are generally successful and happy, while negative thinkers never seem to get ahead.

The powerful component in this equation is emotion. When we fill our mind with positive thoughts, and feel the positive emotions around it, it becomes entrenched in our subconscious mind. And when our subconscious mind believes something, we act out accordingly. If our subconscious mind believes we can accomplish something, even if we weren’t able to before, we can do it!

This happens whether we plan it that way or not. I’ve seen this all too often in my own life. I look back at events in my life where I thought of something, felt the emotion of it, and then experienced it. For example, as a teenageer, I loved watching New York Jets games from Shea stadium. I loved how the fans were so loud that the bleachers actually shook during games. It was their last season at Shea and the last game was coming up. Of course it was sold out, but I imagined how cool it would be to be part of the crowd for that last game. Within days, I received a call from my grandfather saying he just “fell into” tickets to that game. Amazing! When going to college in Upstate New York, I became fascinated with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the city of Toronto. I imagined myself being there, with no intention of getting there any time soon. However, a situation arose where some friends and I were able to get transportation, tickets, and not miss any class time to attend a game. This happened within weeks of my thoughts.

There are plenty of other similar situations. In these cases, I did not deliberately try to attract these situations. They just happened. I’ve discovered that, if these situations can happen “by accident” (even though it was no accident), I have the power to create more of these situations by deliberately imagining and “experiencing” these situations and feeling the positive feelings of actually “being there”.

Our mind is a very powerful thing. When we nurture it by maintaining positive thoughts, and feeling the corresponding emotions of the accomplished goal, wonderful things happen.

Another successful key that the book doesn’t mention is prayer. When we keep our mind and corresponding emotions postive, pray, and leave the details to God, He can do abundantly more than we can ever imagine. He will lead us to opportunites for success according to His will, which indeed is better than anything we can imagine.

The key to doing our part in life is in the opening quote. Use your imagination to envision the ideal situations in all areas of your life. Feel the emotions as if you are already succeeding. Believe it can it will happen. Then look for opportunites to act according to the positive beliefs in your mind, knowing success will be yours. It is a very powerful equation…positive thoughts + positive emotion + faith = SUCCESS!!


Great Steps To Make Your Mind Happy

It is a fact that the more we use the power of our mind, the greater our chances of success. If we want to maximize our mind power, I believe we need to maintain a happy mind. I found a video by Nelson Berry that outlines 4 ways to exercise the power of our mind:

  1. Set goals. The most efficient goals are clear, specific, and present tense.
  2. Clear the mind of clutter. Just as our homes are more comfortable when they are clear and clutter free, our minds work the same way.
  3. Listen to music. Our favorite music has a very positive effect on our mind-set. It helps cultivate the mind, relax, and help us feel good.
  4. Repetition/Consistency. The object is to continuously see the the change we want to be in our minds, and repeat positive phrases to ourselves. When we do that, we are guided to act it out and manifest the results we desire.
