An Extremely Helpful Visualization Technique

January 19, 2013

I have to admit, I have some quirky habits. One is that I am very good at remembering exact months and years that songs were popular. I can hear most songs and pinpoint it almost exactly. Some nights I enjoy listening to songs and deliberately putting myself back to that time in my life. I spend the three minutes or so visualizing the detail…what was I doing, who was I with, what was I watching on tv, where was I working or going to school, what was going on in the world, etc. I am very good at clearly re-living those events, and I actually feel like I went back in time for a few minutes. It definitely elevates my mood as well, and I often wake up the next morning with a smile on my face.

As I return now to 2013, many people talk about how creative visualization can help you accomplish your goals and create the life you are seeking. It’s a great idea, but it’s sometimes difficult for people to envision an event that has never occurred. As a result, they get frustrated, say it doesn’t work, etc. This can bring you further from where you want to be.

Visualization is a very helpful technique, and it has helped me develop the confidence I need and take the action necessary to accomplish goals. As mentioned, it’s not always easy to envision a future event. So how can you make it easier? You can practice by envisioning past events. Go back in time to a pleasant memory. Re-live the details. Where were you? How were you feeling? Who were you with? What were you doing? How did it look, feel, sound, taste, and smell?

It’s much easier to envision a past experience, especially a positive one. The key is to do all of those same things as you visualize a goal that you have for today. See it as if it’s happening. Where are you? How are you feeling? Who are you with? What are you doing? How does it look, feel, sound, taste, and smell?

When you live out your dreams in your mind with vivid details, your subconscious mind begins to believe it. It cannot tell the difference between a real and imagined event, so it’s assuming it’s real. This gives you the confidence you need to take the necessary action. Then you begin seeing results in the real world. It only gets better from there.

People say to avoid living in the past. I believe it’s true, we shouldn’t dwell on the past. However, why not use the same tecnhiques for reliving beautiful memories of the past in detail to create your beautiful life of the future and live the details. After all,,,”It’s a Beautiful Life” (Ace of Bass, December 1995).

Great Steps To Make Your Mind Happy

March 4, 2012

It is a fact that the more we use the power of our mind, the greater our chances of success. If we want to maximize our mind power, I believe we need to maintain a happy mind. I found a video by Nelson Berry that outlines 4 ways to exercise the power of our mind:

  1. Set goals. The most efficient goals are clear, specific, and present tense.
  2. Clear the mind of clutter. Just as our homes are more comfortable when they are clear and clutter free, our minds work the same way.
  3. Listen to music. Our favorite music has a very positive effect on our mind-set. It helps cultivate the mind, relax, and help us feel good.
  4. Repetition/Consistency. The object is to continuously see the the change we want to be in our minds, and repeat positive phrases to ourselves. When we do that, we are guided to act it out and manifest the results we desire.

A Positive Way To Get Noticed

November 6, 2011

There are many people in our world that do things to get noticed. It happens in different ways. It could be the middle school student acting out to get the attention he or she craves. It may be a musician or actor trying to make it big. Perhaps it could be the average worker in corperate America seeking a promotion.

After some conversation and reading, I have found a sure way to get noticed. It seems like a simple, common sense method, but it’s amazing how many people know this and still don’t do it.

So what’s the magic formula? It is simply to do your best. I’ll say it again. DO YOUR BEST. Wait a minute, that’s it? I’ve been told that all my life and it hasn’t taken me far. I understand. The key is to do your best in every situation, in every place. Every time. That’s what separates the average from the extraordinary. When you put your best effort into everything, that’s when people take notice. Here’s another key. Don’t do it to please others. Don’t do it just so people hopefully notice. Do it to please you. Do it so you can sleep at night knowing that you were your best and did all you could possibly do that day. Do it also to please the God that created you, and will bless you abundantly for it.

When we do our best in every area all the time we take the next step to experiencing greatness in our lives. We don’t do it to get attention, but we WILL get attention. We don’t do it to get blessed, but we WILL get blessed. God says that faith without works is dead. Well, these  are the works He is talking about. And when we do our part as well as we can, do you think God will hold back when its our time to be blessed? No way!

Whether you are seeking a great family, superior health, endless work and income opportunities, many friends, or whatever you are seeking in life, do everything wholeheartedly. Even if you are not where you want to be at the moment, you will get there if you do things right. For example, you may desire to be a corporate executive, but right now you are a shift worker on an assembly line. If you are the best assembly worker you can be, you will be promoted to supervisor. The best supervisor you can be then results in another step up. This continues until you eventually get to where you want to be. The more effort you put to being your best, the quicker you get there. There are many stories of this occurring in the lives of ordinary people who ended up with greatness.

Doing our best in everything is not a difficult thing to do. Also, make sure you are trying to be YOUR best, not THE best. We are not competing with anyone. It’s just a fact. When you do your best at everything, doors open and opportunities that you could have never imagined are presented to you with regularity. Make that happen by doing and being your best today. Enjoy the blessings : )

So Long Status Quo

September 14, 2011

I’m at a point in life where I am tired of living the average life. Sure, I am thankful for the many wonderful blessings I have received in life. However, instead of the status quo average in some areas of my life, I am seeking greatness.

The weird thing is that I am seeing that this is exactly where God wants me. I believe it is His voice I am hearing, and He is telling me that, if I have the faith, He can cause the good in my life to increase dramatically. I believe He is saying…here I am. Rely on me and my power and protection. I will take you where you want to go. He wants us to live the incredible life, and He is willing to help us get there.

I am reminded of this whole idea by a song I hear today for the first time in a while. The song is “Brave” by Nichole Nordeman. The chorus says it all..

So long, status quo
I think I’ve just let go
You make me wanna be brave
The way it always was
It’s no longer good enough
You make me wanna be brave

Any one of us can be brave if we rely on God’s power and direction. He can take you from average to great. From status quo to new adventure. From down and negative to flying high and positive. Will you let Him do that for you today?

If you are tired of the status quo, let go and let God take you to your promised land. Pray to Him, have faith, and let Him carry you the rest of the way. Enjoy the blessings : )

Praise You Like I Should

August 11, 2011

There was a song that played regularly on radio in the late 1990s by an obscure artist known as Fatboy Slim. The song was called “Praise You”. It was one of those songs that I never really figured out if I liked it or not. No offense to the singer but the vocal was mediocre, the line “praise you like I should” made up about 3/4 of the songs lyrics, and the same musical riff continued throughout the song. However, that continuous riff was catchy, and the song was stuck in my head on many occasions.

I write about it now because those words still ring through my head as I think about the topic of praise. I appreciate the people and things I have in my life, yet I find that I don’t praise these people and the God that gave them to me like I should.

There are several reasons I believe it is very important to do so. In regards to people, several times in his book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” author Dale Carnegie stresses this theme. He says one of the greatest ways for us to be likeable and influential is to be “hearty in our aprobation and lavish in our praise”. Think about how we feel when someone expresses sincere appreciation for something we’ve done, or if someone comliments us for something, even if it is only a small thing. It can make our day, year, or even sometimes our life.

How many times is the subject of praise brought up in the Bible? it seems countless to me. What strikes my attention most is how the great characters of the Bible start their prayers by first praising God for who He is and what He’s done. Then they present their petitions before Him.

I believe we owe the people in our lives the praise they deserve. I need God’s help with this, and I now pray every day that I can praise the people in my life in voice or action (or both) on a daily basis. Sincere, honest, specific praise for something, no matter how big or small it is. The rewards are instantaneous. The smile on my kids’ faces as I compliment their manners and abilities. The sincere thank you I receive from my wife as I do something for her without her asking. The smile on my students’ faces as I compliment their work. The surprising reaction I get from the stranger on the street when I say something like, “I like that jacket”. These actions make our day, but once again, think about what it can do for someone else.

Finally, God also appreciates our praise. The Bible says it is His will that we are thankful in all circumstances. It also says “let everything that has breath praise the Lord. From my own experience, it seems like the more thankful we are, the more we receive to be thankful for. Also, a thankful heart just makes every situation, good or bad, that much better.

So I challenge myself and anyone else to live our lives with a thankful heart and “praise like we should”  God Bless : )
