The Power of Humility

February 10, 2013

The word humility sometimes gets a bad rap in our society. It is much easier for people to strive for power and the highest position rather than lowering themselves and remaining outside the spotlight. Much of this mind set is human nature.

I am realizing more and more how humility is definitely in our best interests. Really? It’s best to be humble and lower ourselves below all other people? It is here where the concept of humility is most misunderstood. Humility is not lowering yourself to other people and letting them walk all over you. It is not completely denying yourself. It is simply loving yourself in a way that does not put you over anyone else. However,  there’s much more than that.

I was awakened to the most real definition of humility in a book called “Relentless” by John Bevere. In this book he simply refers to humility as submitting to the will and power of God. It’s a matter of simply believing that He knows all of the answers, and knows the way to your best life. He simplifies it by using a Bible verse that says “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6). In his book, Bevere adds to the meaning of grace that goes beyond what we all understand it as. He says it is mainly the empowerment of God. What this verse says then, is that God provides His empowerment to those that don’t rely on their own power and strength, but instead allow Him to lead the way. The proud are those that believe they know best or try to do everything in their own power, by their own ego. God holds back his empowerment for those people.

To me, this is a very simply formula of getting out of the way and letting God do His thing through me instead of me doing everything myself. It does not mean I just sit back and don’t act. It simply means I watch and listen for His leading and act accordingly.

From this account, you can see why greater humility is greater power. It’s because you are simply relying on a power far greater than your own limits. It can only lead to blessing and success. Enjoy : )

A High Percentage Way To Increase Your Personal Power

January 27, 2013

I was reading a blog the other day. The author was lamenting the fact that, due to their busy schedule and some other things going on, they had very little time to spend in prayer and in the presence of God. I was impressed that this person even calculated it by the hour, saying they were spending an average of 4% of their day in God’s presence.

I was impressed with the detail and careful thought this author provided. That was until I thought of my own life. I realized my percentage wasn’t dramatically higher. I do have specific times that I spend in prayer, and I pay attention to the reminder’s of God’s presence. However, I realized that I don’t do it enough. As I did my own calculations, I realized my daily percentage is only around 10-15%.

We are all busy people, and our lives tend to go in many different directions each day. However, I believe we can all find more time to cherish God’s presence and power in our life. In fact, we are commanded to do so. “Seek first the kingdom and righteousness of God, and all other things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

What exactly is seeking the kingsom? From my own research and study over a period of time, I found a simple definition. It is simply focusing on the Spirit and Power of God. Instead of focusing on our limited knowledge and ability, focus on His all-knowing, all-loving, and ever present power. Do this as much as you can during the entire day. It makes a world of difference. It’s simple. The more you seek Him first, the more power and success you will experience.

I realize that it is not easy to constantly focus our attention on one thing, especially when we have so many different challenges around us. However, focusing first on God and His righteousness will give us the power to not only take on the challenges, but conquer them.

After reading that article, I decided to set a goal. My goal is to take my percentage of God seeking time from 10-15% to 75-80%. I am awake for about 16 hours a day. That would be a strong awareness of His presence for 12 of those 16 hours. That takes into account parts of my day that are non-stop, and when my work is most intense. That takes into account times where my mind is simply out of focus. Also, I am not saying that I need to be in constant awareness for the entire hour. Even if I can say for a good part of that time that I was consciosly aware of God’s power in and around me, I can count that towards my total.

Some may think this system is too artificial and forced. Perhaps it is. However, the more you do it, the more natural it becomes. Soon it will be automatic, and when you begin reaping the benefits, you will strive even more for the constant awareness of God’s presence and power.

Just as I challenge myself to take on this challenge, I also challenge my readers. I know that being aware of God’s presence and power empowers me. That is because I’ve experienced it in my life. My greatest struggles come at the times I realize my focus has been away from the Spritual power within me. Take as much time as you can to experience God’s presence. I’m not talking about hours at a time hidded in a closet praying away from everyone else. Instead, just an acknowledgement of His presence during some down time, thanking Him for your blessings while showering or putting your make-up on, 0r simply cherishing His company as you do your favorite activity. It’s really not complicated.

I really believe you will cherish this time with your Creator and seek more of it. You will be empowered and joyful, and you will see all areas of your life take shape, most likely the way you want them to. Please share your results. I will do the same. Enjoy the blessings : )

Following The Yield Sign

December 19, 2012

When I was very young, I quickly became familiar with some of the signs of the road. I wasn’t driving of course, but I was proud to know that the green light meant go, and red meant stop. I learned that the octagon shaped, red sign also meant stop. The yellow signs meant I needed to be cautious of pedestrians, animals, or slippery conditions. However, one sign always confused me. It was that read triangle one that said yield. What does yield mean?, I thought to myself. It was weird. I couldn’t figure it out because sometimes people stopped, sometimes they slowed down, or sometimes they just kept going without changing their speed.

Today I am fully aware of what the yield signs. I learned that it ultimately means giving the right of way. Sometimes I need to stop completely. Somtimes I just need to slow down, and other times I can keep going at pretty much the same speed. However, recently I have learned the importance of yielding  in life. Not so much to other cars, but more to other forces.

What am I talking about? Specifically, I am talking about yielding to God’s power in my life. His power and wisdom is readily available to me. It’s a part of me. It’s part of you. The key is to give it the right of way. We often don’t do that. Life gets so busy and we get so caught up in its fast pace that we go right through the sign. We try to do everything in our own power. However, that often makes things more difficult.

My challenge now is to yield to the true power that is in us. Get out of the way and let God’s power take over. It knows the answers and actions to take. It can accomplish far more than we ever could. It is the power blessings and miracles are made of. Once again, it’s all part of us, waiting to manifest. It’s just a matter of us stepping out of the way and letting it do its work.

I don’t know about you, but I’m done getting in the way of the great power that is in me and wanting to work in my life. It’s time to yield to God’s great power and depend on it instead of relying on my own ego and limited power. I challenge you to do the same. Sometimes you can go ahead, sometimes you need to move slowly, and sometimes you may need to stop completely. The key is to obey the yield sign and yield to the power of God that is part of you. Let it do its great work and watch the miracles take place. You will be blessed in a major way : )

3 Power Steps To The Next Level

August 8, 2012

I am a firm believer in doing what it takes to bring life to a higher level. I am very happy with many things in life, but at the same time, average just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Many posts I write here are geared to help my readers and I take life to a higher level.

I received a newsletter from one of my favorite pastors/authors Joel Osteen the other day. It is titled, “3 Keys To Experiencing the Next Level”. As you can imagine, it certainly had my attention in a hurry! I found the information very helpful and interesting, and I would like to share it with you. Here are the 3 keys Joel mentions:

  1. Believe that God has great things in store for you and wants to bless you. He quotes Psalm 37:4 which says..take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
  2. Release every negative thought and bad experience to God and trust His plan. The verse he mentions here is 2 Corintians 5:17…if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new is here.
  3. Receive the promises of God for your life and live with confidence. He uses Matthew 21:22 which says…you can pray for anything, and if you have faith you will receive it.

I agree with Joel Osteen and firmly believe God wants to take us to a higher level in our lives. I find his 3 step process very helpful, and very simple to do consistently. It can certainly work for you too. For more information on this, go to http://JoelOsteen.com/elevate

Have an excellent day!

Be Aware Of Your Magnificent Power

April 19, 2012

Do you know how much power you have within you? If you are like most people in this world you probably don’t. I was listening to a speech from author/speaker John Bevere the other day. He discussed a study of Christians (a group of people that certainly should be aware of the power they have) where only 2% were aware of how much potential power they have.

Humans are very good at not using their full potential. After all, studies show we only use about 10% of our brains. This includes some very smart people, so can you imagine how smart they would be if they even used twice that amount? In the sermon mentioned earlier, John Bevere discussed the concept of God’s grace. He explained that, besides being a free gift from God that forgives our sins and rewards us with eternal heaven, it is the spiritual empowerment that God provides. It’s the stuff that miracles come from. This is what he found that 98% of Christians don’t know.

There is a magnificent power within every one of us. The Bible is full of verses. Luke 17:22 specifically says, “the kingdom of heaven is within us” Not just the spirit, but the entire kingdom! 2 Timothy 1:7 says God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. In John 14 God says he sends His spirit to empower us, and there are many examples of this, especially in the book of Acts.

The bottom line is that we are all blessed with incredible power. The problem is that most people ( I often include myself in this category) often rely on their own limited power instead of the unlimited power available to them. Why would I want to take on the challenges of life with my many limitations while I have a power with no limits? I don’t know, but I often do. However, that ends now, and I challenge anyone reading this to do the same. Instead, let us constantly be aware of and rely on the wonderful powerful within. That power knows so much more, can be so much more, and accomplish so more than we could ever think of in our own power. Let us prayerfully summon the assistance that God can provide, and use the power as we go through our lives. Let us use it to improve our own lives, and to serve and be an example to others.

We can take our worlds and those of others to a much higher level. That power waits in every one of us. However, don’t let it lay like a dormant volcano. Instead, let it explode and take you places you’ve never even dreamed. I promise that when you stop relying on your own power and ego and instead rely on the Godly spirit and power within you, you will see rapid positive changes in every area of your life. I’ve experienced it and seen it in too many other places to know any different. Remember…you have the power. Now use it fully! Enjoy the blessings : )

A Positive Way To Get Noticed

November 6, 2011

There are many people in our world that do things to get noticed. It happens in different ways. It could be the middle school student acting out to get the attention he or she craves. It may be a musician or actor trying to make it big. Perhaps it could be the average worker in corperate America seeking a promotion.

After some conversation and reading, I have found a sure way to get noticed. It seems like a simple, common sense method, but it’s amazing how many people know this and still don’t do it.

So what’s the magic formula? It is simply to do your best. I’ll say it again. DO YOUR BEST. Wait a minute, that’s it? I’ve been told that all my life and it hasn’t taken me far. I understand. The key is to do your best in every situation, in every place. Every time. That’s what separates the average from the extraordinary. When you put your best effort into everything, that’s when people take notice. Here’s another key. Don’t do it to please others. Don’t do it just so people hopefully notice. Do it to please you. Do it so you can sleep at night knowing that you were your best and did all you could possibly do that day. Do it also to please the God that created you, and will bless you abundantly for it.

When we do our best in every area all the time we take the next step to experiencing greatness in our lives. We don’t do it to get attention, but we WILL get attention. We don’t do it to get blessed, but we WILL get blessed. God says that faith without works is dead. Well, these  are the works He is talking about. And when we do our part as well as we can, do you think God will hold back when its our time to be blessed? No way!

Whether you are seeking a great family, superior health, endless work and income opportunities, many friends, or whatever you are seeking in life, do everything wholeheartedly. Even if you are not where you want to be at the moment, you will get there if you do things right. For example, you may desire to be a corporate executive, but right now you are a shift worker on an assembly line. If you are the best assembly worker you can be, you will be promoted to supervisor. The best supervisor you can be then results in another step up. This continues until you eventually get to where you want to be. The more effort you put to being your best, the quicker you get there. There are many stories of this occurring in the lives of ordinary people who ended up with greatness.

Doing our best in everything is not a difficult thing to do. Also, make sure you are trying to be YOUR best, not THE best. We are not competing with anyone. It’s just a fact. When you do your best at everything, doors open and opportunities that you could have never imagined are presented to you with regularity. Make that happen by doing and being your best today. Enjoy the blessings : )

Focus On The Power

October 28, 2011

A humorous scene in A Charlie Brown Christmas is when Charlie goes to Lucy for help. She says he must be afraid of something, so she goes through a list of fears with him. She fails to pinpoint one, until she comes up with pentophobia, which is the fear of everything. Charlie Brown then exclaims…”that’s it!!”

We can laugh at that humorous situation, but unfortunately, the power of fear is real for many of us. Sometimes it is more powerful than we think. It took a conversation with a child for me to figure this out. Several years ago, when my nephew was about 7 years old, he and his family visted. They lived in the country, while I lived on Long Island. We talked throughout the day. He asked why I didn’t spend more time in the country. I said I would, but I was afraid I wouldn’t last too long in the outdoors. He asked why I didn’t have a girlfriend. I’d said I’d ask more girls out, but I was afraid they’d say no. I had a broken hose I was trying to mess with. He asked why don’t I just fix it? I said I was afraid I would make it worse. Finally he says, “Uncle Joe, are you afraid of everything?”

That question was a wake up call for me. I realized that I couldn’t honestly say no to that question. I was letting fear rule all parts of my life, and many different situations. That conversation was quite a while ago, but I still remember it today, especially if begin to let fear creep into my life.

There is one Bible verse that stands out to help remedy this situation. 2 Timothy 1:7 says..God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and self-control. We need to remember that it is His spirit that lives within us. That spirit is all-powerful, and all-loving. When we are conscious of that fact, fear disappears quickly.

Fear can interfere with our progress in every area of our lives. However, we don’t have to allow it. Focus instead on the powerful Spirit within you and around you, and put your faith in that. Let it lead you. Before you know it, instead of fear and apprehension, you will feel a sense of power and accomplishment. I’ve seen the damage fear can do in my life, and I’ve also seen the rewards that faith and power can bring. Focus on this powerful verse, and you will see it in your own life. Enjoy the blessings : )
